The Snow It Melts The Soonest

‘This is an English folk song, at least 200 years old. It tells the story of a spurned lover, unconvincingly assuring the listener that his short-lived partner will be ‘fain to follow him yet’. The tune was apparently picked up from a Newcastle street singer.

There are so many great versions of this tune, but we learned it from Anne Briggs’ singing. Anne’s version is unaccompanied, so we were free to try and do something a bit different with the chords and counter-melody.’

Joe and Anna are two members of the folk band Jay Sunaway. They are based on opposite ends of London, but still manage to occasionally get together and play. These songs were filmed on a Thursday evening in the lounge of Anna’s flat in South-West London. Follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Soundcloud.
