John Ball

An English folk song sung by John Kirkpatrick and Sydney Carter in the 1980s. It about a radical thirteenth-century hedge priest, John Ball, involved in the English “Peasants’ Revolt” of 1381. The lyrics are based on John Ball’s own sermon words: “When Adam delved and Eve span, who was then the gentleman?”.

We all had different arrangements of the song which we stuck together to create this hybrid monster. It was recorded in a back garden in Paris with lots of children running about and making ill-timed noise.

You can hear more music from Lauren Spiceley and Niko O’Brien from their band Òkina, and more Hannah Jakes under the name Disco Shrapnel.
